What is Linux?
Linux™ itself is the kernel or core of a free open source operating system. Many software packages are needed to make a complete OS but usually get lumped together and called Linux. It was created by Linus Torvalds and has been added to by thousands of people. Linux is distributed under the GNU General Public License.
Linux is usually is packaged with an X Windows clone such as X.org or XFree86 as a graphical server. On top of this server runs a "Window Manager." This application handles all the different programs so you can view, switch, hide, and restore windows. Each window manager has their own unique look and feel. For most Microsoft™ Windows™ users, KDE or Gnome would feel the most familiar. Below you will find a short list with screenshots of the most popular window managers for Linux. One of the things about Linux that people like is the ability to customize your system. The same holds true for these window managers. They can be made to look just like a Windows™ system or something from a sci-fi movie.
If you'd like to try out Linux without installing it on your computer, try Knoppix Linux. Just download the cd image and boot off the cd. No install required and no hard drive space needed. Just remove the cd and reboot and you'll be back to your old system. Great for demos and system repairs!
So what does it look like?
