Applications for Linux Desktop
July 2006Linux is a very versatile operating system. The same kernel, or center of the system is the same for your $500 desktop as it is for a $1,000,000 dollar super computer. Of course different things are enabled in it, everything it's still Linux. You can define what your computer does and not be limited by someone else. One of the very commonly overlooked areas of Linux for a desktop.
Email - Evolution
Evolution is a great replacement for users who are used to MS-Outlook. It has all the features including being able to connect to a MS-Exchange mail server.
Word Processor - Open Office.org
Another great application is OpenOffice.org. Version 2 has really come a long way and can read and write in MS-Office file formats. The default file format is Open Document. It is very similar in design to MS-Word. OpenOffice.org also can export directly to PDF, a feature missing from MS-Office.
Spreadsheets - Open Office.org
OpenOffice.org is really a suite of programs. It too can save/load MS-Excel formated files.
Presentations - Open Office.org
Finally we have OpenOffice.org's Impress. This presentation program is albe to quickly create some nice slide shows and as always, read MS-Powerpoint files.
These are just a few samples of applications that you can use to do real work on the Linux desktop. Everything from photo-editing, audio/sound work, graphic design, 3D graphics, financial, and more is available.
